The show file, the show folder, the caption wording file, the skill file and the template page: what each holds, with an example.
The files Live Producer reads and writes, one section each.
Show file (.vsshow)
Section titled “Show file (.vsshow)”One show: its sources, layers, shots, transition, audio, output settings and the windows that were
open. JSON inside, so it compares and versions well. Double-click it in the Finder to open it in the
Studio. Older .json show documents open as shows too.
- A file inside the show’s folder is stored relative to it (
Media/intro.mov); a file outside by its full path. - What is live is never stored.
See Shows and show files.
Show folder
Section titled “Show folder”A plain folder made by File › New Show…, named after the show:
~/Documents/Live Producer/ Spring Game 2026/ Spring Game 2026.vsshow Script/ Media/ Lower Thirds/ Presenters/ Program Recordings/ ISO Recordings/ Highlights/ Transitions/See Show folders.
Caption wording file (.md)
Section titled “Caption wording file (.md)”A Markdown file that teaches live captions how to write your names. Choose it in Settings › This Show › Captions › Wording File.
- One list item per term: the correct wording, a colon, and the ways it may be heard, separated by commas.
- An item without alternatives only puts the capitals right.
- A table works too: the correct wording in the first column, what may be heard in the second.
- Other text is ignored. Capitals do not matter when matching, and only whole words are replaced.
- Changes to the file are picked up while the Studio runs.

Skill file (.md)
Section titled “Skill file (.md)”A Markdown file that tells Spelvin how your show’s script is written, so it reads the script into sections, parts and cues the way you mean. Keep the three headings and write plain language under them; examples from a real script work better than rules.
# Our all-hands
## The show
- A monthly town hall, about 30 minutes. Maya hosts.
## How the script marks things
- A heading like `5a. Title (2' – Maya)` starts a section.- A line in square brackets like `[Priya live]` starts a part.- `New slide ----` is a slide change.
## What to leave out or watch for
- Lines marked "DRAFT" are notes for the writers.See Skills and Write a skill.
Template page (.html)
Section titled “Template page (.html)”An HTML page that serves many lower thirds. Mark each part that changes with data-vs-var; the
tag’s content is the default.
<span data-vs-var="Firstname" data-vs-label="First Name">Maya</span><div data-vs-var="Title">Chief Technology Officer</div><img data-vs-var="Photo" data-vs-attr="src" src="">See HTML templates.
