An audio input captures every channel of its device; each shot chooses the channels it uses.
An audio input source captures every channel of its device. A recorder or a mixer that sends each microphone as its own channel over USB is added once. Each shot of it then chooses which channel, or pair of channels, it uses.
One source per device
Section titled “One source per device”Add the device once with Add Source, under Audio Inputs. Drag it onto a layer once per microphone. In each shot, choose the channel in the element’s Channels picker, in the inspector’s Sound section. Two shots on channels 1 and 2 of the same device can be live at once, each with its own level and meter.
Pairs and mono
Section titled “Pairs and mono”The choices are the device’s channels in pairs (1 + 2, 3 + 4, …) and, for a device with more than two channels, each channel on its own (1 (Mono), 2 (Mono), …). One channel is used as mono.
Default channels
Section titled “Default channels”The source’s Default Channels, in the inspector’s Input section, apply wherever no shot chooses:
- a shot that leaves Channels at the source’s setting;
- Listen Privately;
- Heard: Always.
Seeing what is used
Section titled “Seeing what is used”In Audio Routing, a device with more than two channels shows a meter per channel, with the channels any shot uses marked in bold. Its state line names the channels heard, for example “On program: channels 1, 3”.
A bus that takes everything on program can leave out single channels of such a device, under Leave Out in the bus’s … menu.
Changes on Take
Section titled “Changes on Take”The channels belong to the shot. Changing them on a live shot is an edit, and reaches the program on Take.
